LA VOGALONGA DI VENEZIA

La Vogalonga a Venezia

May 24

During a race on November 11, 1974, between a group of Venetians, both amateurs and professionals, the idea of setting up a regatta dedicated to all the enthusiasts of the Venetian voga was born, to revive this ancient tradition and to support a campaign against the degradation and waves in the Lagoon of Venice. The promoters were mainly promoters of Lauro Bergamo, at that time director of Il Gazzettino, as well as Toni Rosa Salva and Giuseppe Rosa Salva, often engaged in the first person for the preservation of Venice. On January 26, 1975, these ideas were translated into an official announcement for the establishment of Vogalonga, which was presented to citizenship and the press, promoted by a special committee. The route, about 30 km long, was designed to touch important and central locations in Venice, such as the Basin of San Marco and the Grand Canal, and to reach the surrounding areas, including Burano and Murano, to return to Venice from the canal of Cannaregio, which enters the Grand Canal and ends before the Punta della Salute. The first Vogalonga took place on May 8, 1975, the day of ” Sensa ”, with the departure of all the boats gathered in front of Palazzo Ducale , sanctioned by a cannon shot. From this first edition there were about 1,500 riders, with 500 boats coming from Venice, from many other locations in the Veneto and with some crew coming from other regions. With subsequent editions, Vogalonga gradually increased consensus and participation, reaching over 1,600 boats and over 6,000 registered in 2008, with regattas coming from around the world and with every kind of boat All participants who arrived at the finish line, excluding disqualified crews, receive a commemorative medal and a certificate of participation. At times, additional prizes, donated by associations and institutions, are also drawn.
